Career Guidance Program Review Held

ENSSURE organized a review meeting of the ‘Career Guidance Program in Schools’ in Kathmandu on 22 April 2019.

The participants included the Mayor of Budhanilkantha Municipality Uddhav Kharel, principals and career guidance teachers of Budanilkantha Secondary School, Adarsha Secondary School, Bhaktapur, Bal Uddhar Kapan, education unit chiefs of Madhyapur Thimi and Bhaktapur Municipalities along with ENSSURE Project manager Tek Bahadur Malla, other team members and ANTARANG team members. There were 27 participants in total. Welcoming the program, ENSSURE Project manager Malla thanked all concerned for the successful implementation of two rounds of career guidance program in the schools. He also urged participants to find out the ways for making the activity a sustainable one.

Addressing the participants, Budhanilkantha Mayor Kharel pledged his commitment to support the program in his municipality assuring steps to explore possibility of including the component in local level curriculum. He also said that he would share his findings of the review meeting at the forum of 18 municipalities of the Valley. Commending the materials prepared for the intervention, he alluded that these could be used by the Municipality utilizing the investment.

The teachers shared their experience of the training they got and the experience while conducting sessions for the students. They said the program was effective for the students and expressed that the intervene can also reduce the number of dropouts as the students were likely to be motivated for certain career.

Their recommendations included inclusion of the component in school curriculum, involvement of the local government for the program’s sustainability, conducting the sessions at the beginning of the academic sessions, having two level of guidance- basic and advanced, proper orientation to the guardians, other teachers and staffs of the schools where the program is being conducted.

ENSSURE is implementing the career guidance program in schools through its partner ANTARANG. So far, the intervention has been implemented in 51 schools with training of 101 teachers and providing career guidance to 6673 students in seven states.

Similar review meeting was held in Bardibas on 11 April 2019. A total of 35 participants attended the program. In Bardibas, the teachers also shared that the program had been fruitful to the students and recommended for the activity to be incorporated in the curriculum.
